Richthofen were a music group founded in 1997 by Andy Classen and Dirk Weiss , which were assigned to the area of New German Hardship . The band released two albums and broke up in 1999.

history

The band Richthofen was founded in 1997 by Andy Classen , former guitarist of the thrash metal band Holy Moses , and Dirk Weiss of the thrash metal band Warpath . Weiss and Classen knew each other since Warpath had released their debut album in 1992 on the West Virginia label by Andi and Sabina Classen , Weiss was also involved in the production of the Holy Moses album Reborn Dogs . Together with guest musicians Sanjai Shah (drums, percussion) and Gernot Leinert (keyboard, bass) from the band Shit for Brains , Alex Spiekermann (drums), the two former guitarists of the band Erosion Stefan Römhild and Michael Hankel as well as the former hate squad -Bassist Marco Schulz recorded the debut album Seelenwalzer , which was released on May 26, 1997 on GUN Records . The album was sold more than 20,000 times and the two songs Words of the Flesh and Blood of the Horses were released as a single. On the tour that followed, the band was supported by Stefan Römhild, Michael Hankel and Marco Schulz and played together with Die Krupps . Before the band could also accompany Kreator and Dimmu Borgir in 1998 , the two guitarists were replaced by Michael Schluseneck from Warpath and Martin Melms, as there was a conflict about the amount of the fees.

Andy Classen left the band after the first album and concentrated on other projects. Michi Schluseneck, Alex Spiekermann and Martin Melms became permanent band members, and bassist Jan David joined them. On January 11, 1999, the band released the second album Helden der Zeit , which reached number 88 in the German charts, together with guest musicians Stefan Hinsch (bass) and Peter Struckini . The single Hart am Wind was released from the album . A few months after the release, the band broke up, partly due to pressure from the family of the German fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen , who forced a name change.

After the split, Michael Schluseneck played with the band Precipitation and later with Endhammer . The Precipitation LP Mehr als Dieben was produced by Peter Struck, who also worked on the album Helden der Zeit . Dirk "Digger" Weiss switched to the band RoHoel and the live guitarist Michael Hankel became a member of Classen's old band Holy Moses .

In 2018 the band was revived under the name SeelenWalzer by Andy Classen and Dirk Weiss, with the new band members Gernot Leinert, Sanjai Shah Hauschild and Alex Spiekermann. In their debut album Totgeglaut , they sampled some songs with melodic passages from the film Schindler's List and won Andy's ex-wife Sabina Hankel-Hirtz as a guest musician for the single release MeeresBlut.

Naming and allegations

The band was named by Weiss und Classen after the German fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen . However, this led to allegations of the band's proximity to the right-wing extremist scene, which were clearly rejected by the musicians. In an article in Metal Hammer in 1999 Weiss commented on this: “Anyone who deals with the name Richthofen in detail knows that the fighter pilot Freiherr von Richthofen had nothing to do with the Nazi shit. At that time he and his combative image were simply exploited by the propaganda of the Third Reich. We didn't think anything of it when we chose this name for our band. It just sounded good. Point. I know, however, that this attitude was a bit naive. "

When the band Weissglut , with which the tour was supposed to take place in 1999, was also confronted with the accusation of a right-wing band because of their member Josef Maria Klumb , Weiss expressed concerns about whether they would really tour with Weissglut: “We are all the more sensitive now the white glow story. If not all concerns can be resolved, we will look for another support. Regardless of whether they come from the right or left corner, we will not encourage inhuman attitudes. ”On the tour, the band later performed with the bands Drecksau , Incubator and Path of Debris .
