The place of execution in Bregenz was the place of execution where those convicted of the Bregenz rule in Vorarlberg were executed . The term place of execution used to stand for the place where the court was held.

In the Hofrieden court it is recorded that executions were also carried out outside the usual place of execution. For example, Marx Parakeet von Ems, in his role as Vogt , had 50 farmers hung on oak trees in a hangman's place on the Leiblach , who had claimed their rights as part of a peasant uprising . The square there is still called "Henkeichen" today. 1526, the leaders of these farmers were then button of Leubas and Kunz host captured, tortured repeatedly and probably at the execution site Bregenz by train executed. location

The Bregenz execution site was located on the southern edge of the municipality of Lochau (formerly part of the Hofrieden court ) in the Galgenbihl plot and is still partially undeveloped ( 415  m above sea level ). The houses at Bregenzer Strasse 27, 31 and 33 are now on the slope.

The place of execution was located between the villages of Lochau and Bregenz, in an area that was undeveloped at the time. However, the main road between Lochau and Bregenz leads over the Klausberg or the Klause directly past the place of execution and the people who were killed could thus be seen clearly by the road users.

history

In a document dated January 9, 1498, a high court in the area of the Wellenau (parcel in front of the Klause in Lochau) is mentioned, on which the gallows of the Bregenz rule stood. In 1643 the city of Bregenz was granted high jurisdiction , which previously only belonged to the respective Counts of Bregenz . On December 12th 1834 the last person was probably executed here (Joh. Georg Rohner for murder).

On the site of the former execution site, the Villa Fairholme (also: Villa Wellenau ) was built by Sir Georg Fairholme in 1873 . This was canceled in 1976.

Right to exercise blood jurisdiction

The Counts of Bregenz exercised the right to kill people, the blood jurisdiction, basically on the basis of the possession of the rulership of Bregenz. As with many execution sites, the history of the origins of Bregenz remains in the dark and the first executions carried out there are not recorded in any sources. How many death sentences were carried out here is therefore unknown. Bregenz has had its own executioner for the first time since 1565, Master Mathis Pflug (see also: Executioner in Vorarlberg ).
