Bertrand has been on sick leave due to depression for two years . While his wife Claire and the two children can cope with the situation, Claire's sister Clem and her husband Thibault in particular exert pressure and see Bertrand as weak. One day he discovered an ad in the swimming pool that was looking for new members for the men's synchronized swimming group . Without knowing exactly what to expect, he goes to training. The group is mixed up, but each of the men has to carry his or her parcel: Laurent has a mother who lives in the nursing home and who alternately receives him lovingly and then repels him with ranting. He takes out his anger over the situation on his family until his wife and son leave him. Marcus is an unsuccessful entrepreneur who is currently in the process of managing his fourth store - this time for swimming pools - into bankruptcy. Simon is an aging musician who earns his living washing dishes in his daughter Lola's school and living his dream as a musician in his free time. However, he is unsuccessful, has released several self-produced CDs that never sold, and lives in a trailer. He makes his appearances in old people's homes. Basile is in his late 30s and too old to get a loan for his own apartment, which plunges him into a minor crisis. Avanish from Senegal hardly speaks French and Thierry, who works as a lifeguard in the swimming pool, has little experience with women and realizes that the advancing technology will soon make him redundant as a lifeguard.
The group is trained by the young dolphins, who used to be a synchronized swimmer in a duo with Amanda, until she was dependent on a wheelchair after an accident. Delphine was robbed of the center of her life and became an alcoholic . She has been dry for five years now and working as a trainer gives her stability in life. The group has - without Bertrand, who has just joined the team - their first appearance in front of an audience, where they are politely applauded. Laurent, in particular, reacts sarcastically to the group's performance. When the men decide on a whim to take part in the men's synchronized swimming world championships in Norway as a team from France , he is the only one who votes against it. In fact, the group is bad at the first real rehearsals, but the men see the World Cup under the motto “Participation is everything”.
Delphine relapses into alcohol addiction when her ex-husband accuses and charges her of stalking. She is on sick leave for a long time. Amanda takes over the team spontaneously. The fun becomes serious and the men now have to exercise regularly and are practically drilled. You practice holding your breath, as one of the men as a sub-man has to stay under water for a long time in order to form the basis for the execution. By chance, Laurent meets John in the nursing home, who has developed a special technique of holding breath to escape the old people's odor. John becomes the group's new subordinate. One day the situation escalates during training because Amanda is too strict and Laurent pushes her and her wheelchair into the water. It is Thierry who succeeds in bringing Delphine back as a trainer, where she is now training the group with Amanda. Both complement each other well and the men also manage to tackle the construction sites in their lives: Simon withdraws from the music business, Laurent brings his mother home from the home and Bertrand manages to assert himself against his brother-in-law and becomes also supported by his wife Claire.
The group goes to the World Cup in Norway with Simon's caravan. Although all the other teams seem professional, the team manages to overcome their fears and doubts and put on a celebrated show to Philip Bailey and Phil Collins ' Easy Lover . The group wins the gold medal and Bertrand feels joy and happiness for the first time in a long time. The victory has positive consequences for all team members in their private and professional lives, even if the French news does not even notice the victory.

A pool full of men was the feature film directing debut of actor Gilles Lellouche, who had previously made several short films and co-directed feature films. Lellouche got the idea for the film after watching a documentary on ARTE about a Swedish men's synchronized swimmer team. It took more than five years to work on the film. In order to be able to implement the synchronized swimming scenes, the actors took training lessons twice a week with Julie Fabre , trainer of the French national team, for seven months from the end of 2016 . Indian comedian, musician and presenter Balasingham Thamilchelvan, who played the role of Avanish in the film, was a non-swimmer and learned to swim for the film.
The film was shot within five weeks in Chennevières-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne), Nogent-sur-Oise , Avon (scenes in the nursing home), Échirolles , Fort de Comboire and Lans-en-Vercors , among others . Simon's concert was filmed in February 2017 on the Grenoble University campus in Saint-Martin-d'Hères , scenes in Norway were filmed in Le Kremlin-Bicêtre and Grenoble , among others . The costumes were created by Elise Bouquet and Reem Kuzayli , the film construction was done by Florian Sanson .
The film premiered on May 13, 2018 at the Cannes International Film Festival and opened in French cinemas on October 24, 2018. In Germany, the film was shown for the first time on November 28, 2018 at the French Film Week in Berlin and was released in cinemas on June 27, 2019.

At César 2019 , the film was one of the most nominated entries. Philippe Katerine won the César for Best Supporting Actor .
