The Rieder Hut is a refuge of the Austrian Alpine Club in the Höllengebirge in Upper Austria's Salzkammergut . The hut is located in the eastern part of the mountain near the Feuerkogel . The local mountain of the Rieder Hut is the highest point in the Höllengebirge, the 1862 m high Große Höllkogel . In summer as in winter, the hut is a popular destination for mountain hikers, ski tourers and snowshoeers.
History
The Rieder Hütte was built by the Ried im Innkreis PES section and opened on December 1, 1930. Initially the hut was an office barrack, which was no longer needed after the construction of the Feuerkogel cable car. In 1945 the hut served as a shelter for a group of resistance fighters around Albrecht Gaiswinkler , who were supposed to kill Goebbels after they parachuted over the Feuerkogel. In 1973 the hut fell victim to a fire. In the following years it was rebuilt and reopened in the summer of 1977.
