The Große Höllkogel is 1862 m above sea level. A. the highest peak of the Höllengebirge . It is also a popular hiking mountain because of its excellent views over the Mondsee , the Attersee , the Traunsee Mountains , the Dead Mountains , the Dachstein up to the Berchtesgaden Mountains and the entire Alpine foothills.
At the foot of the Großer Höllkogel lies the Rieder Hütte , northwest of the Kleine Höllkogel ( 1788 m above sea level ).
Climbs
- from the Rieder hut of the Austrian Alpine Club , walking time: around 45 minutes
- from the mountain station of the cable car to the Feuerkogel over the plateau of the eastern Höllengebirge, walking time: about 2½ hours
- from Langwies in the valley of the Traun over the Vordere Spitzalm , walking time: 4½ to 5 hours; almost 1,500 meters in altitude!
- from the Höllkessel through the Höllkogel south face , winter tour, mixed to UIAA III / WI3, 5 to 6 hours (Wacha, 2015)
