The Rietbrücke is a road bridge in the Swiss municipality of Diepoldsau in the part of the Rhine Valley belonging to the canton of St. Gallen .

history

The construction of the Rietbrücke became necessary because the new management of the Alpine Rhine has separated Diepoldsau (village) from the previous direct access to and from Switzerland through the Diepoldsauer breakthrough and now lies between the Old Rhine and the New Rhine like an island.

location

Diepoldsau is located on the west bank of the Old Rhine, which runs in a loop that stretches to the east and forms the border with Austria . Since the Diepoldsauer Rhine breakthrough in the course of the Rhine regulation , the place has been on the east bank of the 1923 newly built, straightened and canalized Alpine Rhine .

The bridge is, next to the larger Rhine bridge Diepoldsau on Tramstrasse, the second connection between Diepoldsau and the mainland of Switzerland. It is in the extension of Oberrieterstrasse. The former Rhine bridge Diepoldsau, which consisted 1913-1985 (also: tram bridge called), the reed bridge looked very similar. The Wiesenrainbrücke , which lies further downstream between Widnau and Lustenau , was built in a similar design and still exists.

description

This steel truss bridge was built between 1912 and 1914. This is a steel - truss bridge with continuous support over five fields and with bottom track for two- and single-track vehicles and pedestrians. The pillars are made of reinforced concrete , one of which is in the Alpine Rhine .

The next downstream Rhine bridge (to Diepoldsau, Trambrücke ) is about 900 meters to the northeast as the crow flies. The next upstream bridge over the Alpine Rhine is about 3.5 km to the southwest near Kriessern . About 2 km to the east is the Paul Grüninger Bridge over the Old Rhine at the border crossing to Hohenems , Austria . From the center of Diepoldsau the Rietbrücke is about 1000 meters as the crow flies to the west.

The bridge is approved for a maximum weight of 16 tons, can be driven on in two lanes for cars, and only in one lane for trucks and tractors. The bridge is 258 meters long and 6.3 meters wide. The widths between the pillars are: 28.6 - 49.3 - 92.5 - 49.3 - 28.6 meters.

At the Rietbrücke there is a flood measuring point and groundwater measuring point with which the Alpine Rhine is permanently monitored by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

Traffic load

The Rietbrücke is crossed by around 3000 two-lane vehicles every day. Around a third of this is through traffic and two thirds are local traffic by the resident population. According to the Diepoldsau overall traffic concept of February 4, 2012, no further traffic loads should occur over the Rietbrücke.

film records

The Rietbrücke was the backdrop for the film Grüninger's files . For the feature film Heimatland on December 5, 2014, it was used for the final scene. Around 200 extras and 30 cars lined the bridge for this film and showed how the Swiss people want to leave the country for fear of a huge storm, but are stopped at the border by a foreign military blockade. Among other things, it was shown how this led to a hectic rush among the fleeing people.
