The Rifugio Guglielmina was a privately managed alpine mountain hut at 2880 m slm on the south side of the Monte Rosa massif with a capacity of 40 two-bed rooms. Built in 1878, it was completely destroyed by fire in 2011 and was not rebuilt afterwards.
Mountain environment
The rifugio was just below the Col d'Olen, which connects the Corno Rosso ( 3023 m ) with the Corno del Camoscio ( 3026 m ). It served as a base for tours in the high mountain regions of the Monte Rosa massif, e.g. B. on the 4000er peaks Vincent-Pyramid ( 4087 m ), Dufourspitze ( 4634 m ), Parrotspitze ( 4463 m ) or Signalkuppe ( 4554 m ).
Accesses
The rifugio could be reached via several paths from the valley town of Alagna Valsesia, approx. 1700 meters below . One of these paths leads from Alagna first to the west over the Passo Foric. On the way through the Val d'Otro are the mountain settlements of Dorf, Follù, Scarpia and Pianmisura. The subsoil is greened up to the Passo Foric.
The access running north from Alagna leads past the Rifugio Pastore. To get to the Rifugio Guglielmina on this path, you have to cross the Passo del Diavolo, on the steep ascent over loose scree you need surefootedness and a head for heights.
A cable car with two intermediate stations leads from Alagna to the Passo dei Salati at 2936 m , from where you can walk to the Rifugio Guglielmina in 15 minutes. A cable car also leads from Tschaval north of Gressoney via Gabiet to the Passo dei Salati.
From the Col d'Olen, the path runs west downwards into the neighboring valley of Val di Gressoney towards the local center of Gressoney la Trinité . About half way down there is the possibility in Gabiet to turn north towards Hochlicht, Rifugio Città di Mantova and Capanna Gnifetti .
Another way to ascent into the higher mountains, also in the direction of the Rifugio Gnifetti, leads over the Stolemberg ( 3202 m ) with a steeply sloping ridge, Punta Indren ( 3260 m ) and the Ghiacciaio d'Indren (Indren glacier).
Fire on December 22, 2011
In the early morning of December 22nd, 2011, the rifugio burned out completely. Strong winds fanned the flames and prevented extinguishing work. People were not harmed in the fire.
