Ringwall Rittershausen

The ring wall Rittershausen , also simply called the castle , is an abandoned ring wall system on the heights of the Hohen Lay (516 m) near Rittershausen (Dietzhölztal) in the Lahn-Dill district in Central Hesse . It dates from the La Tène period and was used between 450 and 300 BC. Settled.

The hilltop castle was probably built in the early La Tène period (from 450 BC). From 1911 to 1913, during excavations by Pastor Karl Nebe and Kommerzienrat Gustav Jung under the direction of the State Museum in Wiesbaden, extensive finds of iron weapons and implements as well as ceramics and jewelry were found. According to previous knowledge, the castle was built in the 3rd century BC. Destroyed and not rebuilt afterwards. It could also have been a fortification of Celtic nobility .
