Burgstall castle

The Burgstall Burg , also known as the Burg bei Burg , is an abandoned early medieval spur castle above the Burger Church on the "Breiten Berg" at 235  m above sea level. NN in the Burg district in Herborn in the Lahn-Dill district ( Hesse ) in the street Am Türmchen .

history

The later castle probably goes back to a Carolingian palace complex , which was built between 700 and 800 to complement the Herborn royal court on the mountain spur.

When and by whom the castle was built cannot be precisely proven. Possibly destroyed in the disputes of the Dernbach feud over the Herborner Mark by the Counts of Nassau , it was probably given up and abandoned early on. A documentary mention in 1263 indicates the place name derived from the castle with the local nobility of the same name. The noble family named themselves after the castle from 1206 (first documented mention) until it died out in the 14th century. The castle is also seen as a military addition to the ecclesiastical and secular central functions of Herborn.

present

In 1964, remnants of the wall, probably tower foundations with steps, were found during road works above the Burger Church. Further investigations were carried out in 1971. The remains of the wall of a west gate and the foundations of a round tower have been preserved today and have been integrated into a private property in an exemplary manner. A sign points to the former facility.
