Truett Banks "Rip" Sewell (born May 11, 1907 in Decatur , Alabama , † September 3, 1989 in Plant City , Florida ) was an American baseball player . In his career he played for the Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates . He is the inventor of the so-called Eephus pitch .
