Edouard Risler
Édouard Joseph Risler (born February 23, 1873 in Baden-Baden , † July 22, 1929 in Paris ) was a French pianist .
He studied with the famous pedagogue Louis Diémer at the Paris Conservatory and with the Liszt students Bernhard Stavenhagen and Eugen d'Albert .
Risler was not only considered the first pianist of the French school to seriously and comprehensively deal with the work of Ludwig van Beethoven , but also as one of the first to perform all 32 sonatas by the Bonn master cyclically - in 1906 in Berlin . The critics were enthusiastic and particularly emphasized his sensitive touch and his wide range of expressions, which added decisive nuances to the previous Beethoven picture.
Arthur Rubinstein , who heard Risler on this occasion, later even emphasized that he had never again experienced such an impressive visualization of the Beethoven sonata cosmos. However, this can also be understood as a defensive reaction against the German, "difficult" Beethoven tradition, for which an Artur Schnabel and a Wilhelm Backhaus were revered and with which Rubinstein admitted, like so many of his Slavic colleagues, could not do anything.
Risler arranged and performed Till Eulenspiegel's amusing pranks by Richard Strauss for piano solo.
