Rita Gam (born April 2, 1927 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † March 22, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

life and work

Rita Gam, who appeared as the bridesmaid at Grace Kelly's wedding with Prince Rainier of Monaco , has appeared in 24 films since 1952. The most famous were Hannibal by Edgar G. Ulmer in 1959 and King of Kings by Nicholas Ray in 1961 . There are also appearances in various television series. She last appeared as an actress in the mid-1990s.

In 1953 she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category Best Young Actress with the film I am a nuclear spy by director Russell Rouse . For No Exit she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 1962 Berlinale .

Cecil B. DeMille initially wanted to cast Rita Gam for The Ten Commandments , but in talks with the director she declined the part because she considered herself too irreligious.

Rita Gam was married twice; between 1949 and 1954 with the director Sidney Lumet and between 1956 and 1963 with the publisher Thomas Guinzburg, with whom she also had two children. She died in a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 88.
