Rita Ossai (born October 12, 1994 in Benin City ) is a Nigerian hurdler who specializes in the 400 meter distance .

Athletic career

Rita Ossai gained her first international experience at the World Youth Championships in 2011 near Lille , where she was eliminated in the 400-meter run with 54.02 s in the semifinals and finished fourth in the Nigerian sprint relay (1000 meters) in 2: 06.26 min. In 2013 she won the Junior African Championships in Réduit in 3: 37.9 minutes with the Nigerian 4 x 400 meter relay and won the silver medal over 400 meters in 53.84 seconds behind her compatriot Ada Benjamin . At the IAAF World Relays 2015 in the Bahamas she was eliminated in the preliminary round with 3: 32.16 minutes and at the Africa Games in Brazzaville she was disqualified from the relay because of a doping offense of one of her teammates. In 2017 she won the silver medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku with both the 4-by-100-meter and the 4-by-400-meter relay and was fifth in the hurdles in 58.65 s. In 2018 she took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast for the first time and was eliminated there in advance. In August, she finished fourth in the African Championships in Asaba , her home country, in 59.11 seconds.

In 2019 she took part again in the Africa Games in Rabat and was eliminated there with 60.36 seconds.

In 2017, Ossai became the Nigerian champion in the 400-meter hurdles.
