The River Calder is a river in Lancashire , England . The River Calder rises at Fiendsdale Head in the Forest of Bowland and initially flows in a westerly direction. At the village of Oakenclough , it changes direction to the south. East of the town of Catterall , the river turns west again and then crosses the M6 motorway and the Lancaster Canal . The river flows north of Catterall and flows into the River Wyre in the northwest of the village .
Water from the River Calder enabled the printing and leather industry in Catterall to operate until 1891, but then the local water company - the Fylde Water Company - was given permission by a resolution of the parliament to draw large amounts of water in the upper reaches of the river for drinking water supply and so on there was no longer enough water available to operate the machines.
