As River City Relay ( German  River City Relay ) is a move in the game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints called on 21 December 2003 which was won by the Jaguars with 20:19 after the kicker the Saints the point after Touchdown missed.

background

The Saints went into this game with a record of 7 wins and 7 losses and needed a win to have a chance of a playoff place. Your kicker John Carney was considered one of the best kickers of the time. He had previously been able to score all the extra points for four years and most recently he missed an extra point in 1993.

In the first play of the game, the Jaguars came to the 29-yard line of the Saints, but then quarterback Byron Leftwich threw an interception , which the Saints got the ball. The Saints completed their attack streak with a field goal , which led them 3-0. Shortly after the start of the second quarter, the Jaguars equalized with a field goal. After the subsequent drive of the Saints ended with a turnover on downs , the Jaguars took their chance and took the lead 10: 3 after a touchdown. The Saints could not use the following drive either, which is why they punted . The Jaguars began their attack at their own 9-yard line, but the first play was intercepted. The Saints only had to earn 8 yards to score a touchdown and after a successful extra point by Carney it was 10:10. The Jaguars took the lead with a touchdown 25 seconds before half-time. After a punt by the Saints and a turnover on downs by the Jaguars, the Saints had the ball again in the third quarter, but could only achieve one field goal, making it 17:13 for the Jaguars. In the following drive, however, the Jaguars increased again to 20:13. Shortly after the start of the fourth quarter, however, the Saints' running back fumbled , giving the Jaguars possession. The Jaguars got as far as the Saints' 3-yard line, from where they tried to shoot a field goal, but it was blocked. After both teams punctured the ball once, the Saints got the ball 4 minutes before the end. They came to the 9-yard line of the Jaguars, but had to accept a turnover on downs there. At 2:07 minutes the Jaguars took over the ball, but had to punt at 17 seconds of remaining playing time. After the return, there were 11 seconds on the clock and the Saints were on their own 25-yard line. The first pass thrown was not caught.

The move

With only seven seconds left and a score of 13:20, the Saints had to overcome 75 yards to score a touchdown. The Saints lined up in shotgun formation and announced the All Go Special move . After the snap, quarterback Aaron Brooks passed right to wide receiver Donté Stallworth , who caught the ball near the center line and broke several tackles but was stopped at the Jaguars' 33-yard line, whereupon he made a lateral pass to wide receiver Michael Lewis threw. Lewis was able to achieve a space gain of 7 yards before he threw a lateral pass, which was caught by running back Deuce McAllister . After McAllister came to the Jaguars' 21-yard line, he threw a lateral pass to wide receiver Jerome Pathon , which carried him into the end zone . After the referees video-checked the play, they gave the touchdown , making it 19:20 against the Saints. With no playing time left, a successful point after touchdown would bring the game into overtime. After long snapper Kevin Houser snapped the ball to Holder Mitch Berger , kicker Carney shot the ball, but it flew right past the goal posts, making the extra point unsuccessful. So the Jaguars won the game.

consequences

After that game, the Saints were eliminated from the battle for playoff participation, which they would have done if they had won the game in overtime since the competing teams had won.

The River City Relay received the 2004 Best Play ESPY Award , which honors the best sporting event of the previous year. In the ranking of the happiest moves in the National Football League by ESPN , the move was ranked 5th.
