The River Itchen is a river in east Warwickshire , England . It rises at Wormleighton and runs for 28.7 km (18 mi ) in the main direction from south to north.

course

The Itchen rises at Wormleighton and then runs in a wide valley northeast of a hill with Ironstone , which form the border between Warwickshire and Northamptonshire . Soon after its creation, it passes the Oxford Canal . The young river is reinforced by several small streams and flows in several loops around the village of Bishop's Itchington , from which it takes its name. Then he crosses the route of the former Great Western Railway from London to Birmingham (today Chiltern Trains ).

A mile and a half north of Bishop's Itchington he crosses Deppers Bridge , which gives the neighboring hamlet its name. A mile further he passes under the A425 west of Southam . Immediately after the bridge, it flows through Stoneythorpe Park and passes the hamlet of Bascote . One mile north of Bascote, the Grand Union Canal crosses the Itchen Valley on a 700-meter-long dam and aqueduct .

The Itchen reaches the village of Long Itchington and flows past the church. To the west of the village the river turns west for a short time and its meanders are bridged twice by the former "Leamington to Rugby Line" (Weedon line), which is now a footpath.

The Itchen then turns north again and after 5 km it reaches Marton , where it flows into the River Leam .

history

Itchen at Long Itchington

The name of the river dates back to pre-Celtic times. The meaning is unknown.

In 2009, thousands of fish were poisoned when chemicals from neighboring farms were washed into the river. In the same year 3500 roach , hazel and chub were reinstated.

A section of the river is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because it "plays an important role in the development of underwatered rivers, the water discharge of which is related to changes in river activities in post-glacial climate change and the associated decreased runoff."
