The Rivière Shipshaw is a left tributary of the Rivière Saguenay in the Canadian province of Québec .

The upper course of the river is dammed together with the Rivière Betsiamites to the Réservoir Pipmuacan . The Rivière Shipshaw flows mainly in a southerly direction. There are several hydropower plants and dams along its course. At the beginning it flows through the 20 km long dammed Lac Onatchiway, 60 km north of Chicoutimi . Then it is dammed up to Lac La Mothe . A pressure line connects the dam with the hydroelectric power station. This is at the upper end of the Lac Brochet , which also feeds a hydroelectric power station. This is followed by the Lac Sébastien reservoir . The Rivière Shipshaw overcomes several rapids over the next 25 km. The Route 172 crosses the river. Eventually it is dammed up by the Barrage Murdock-Wilson . A pressure pipe leads the water down to the mouth of the river in the Rivière Saguenay in the immediate vicinity of the Barrage de Shipshaw dam on the Rivière Saguenay with an attached hydroelectric power station. The river has a length of 130 km.

Hydropower plants

Resolute Forest Products operates 5 hydropower plants along the river:

  • Onatchiway, 0.225 MW, 2 units (1 in service), since 1925, Lac Onatchiway
  • Jim-Gray, 63 MW, 2 units, since 1953, Lac La Mothe
  • Adam-Cunningham, 7 MW, 1 unit, since 1953, Lac Brochet
  • Chute-aux-Galets, 14.4 MW, 2 units, since 1921, Lac Sébastien
  • Murdock-Wilson, 55 MW, 1 unit, since 1957

leisure

Thanks to the upstream dams, the lower reaches of the river carry sufficient water for activities such as rafting .
