Rivka Horwitz
Rivka Horwitz (* in November 1926 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe as Rivka Goldschmidt ; † January 4, 2007 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli philosopher and professor of philosophy and Jewish intellectual history at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev .
Life
Rivka Goldschmidt was born in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in November 1926. Her father ran a Jewish sanatorium in Bad Homburg . He died shortly after Rivka's birth. So it was not difficult for the mother, who came from Russia and was a Zionist , to emigrate to Palestine soon after the National Socialists “ seized power ” .
After completing school and military service in Israel, Rivka studied philosophy, Jewish intellectual history and religious mysticism in Jerusalem and New York. In the United States she married Josef Horwitz. 1962 Rivka Horwitz earned with a thesis on the philosophy of language of Franz Rosenzweig the PhD at the University of Pennsylvania (Bryn Mawr) - the first dissertation on Rosenzweig since 1,933th
After several positions as a lecturer , senior lecturer and associate professor in the USA, she returned to Israel with her husband and their two children, where Josef Horwitz, ScD, was professor of chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Rivka Horwitz as professor of Jewish Thought taught in the Department of History at Ben Gurion University in the Negev .
The focus of her work was on researching the Jewish heritage in German intellectual history from Moses Mendelssohn to Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig. She has held several visiting professorships at universities in the USA and Germany, such as the Franz Rosenzweig visiting professorship at the University of Kassel in 1995 . In 2004 she was elected honorary president of the International Rosenzweig Society. Shortly before her death, she was presented with a commemorative publication for her 80th birthday: Judaism: Topics, Fragments, Faces, Identities. Jubilee Volume in Honor of Rivka (Jerusalem 2006). Rivka Horwitz died on January 4, 2007 in Jerusalem.
