Franz Rosenzweig visiting professor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Franz Rosenzweig visiting professorship at the University of Kassel has been a reminder of the religious-philosophical work and educational work of Franz Rosenzweig (1886–1929), the great Jewish son of the city of Kassel , since 1987 . The idea to set up this visiting professorship came about during the International Franz Rosenzweig Congress held at the university on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Franz Rosenzweig in 1986 , which was under the patronage of Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker and to which over 70 speakers from all over the world had traveled.

The Franz Rosenzweig visiting professorship - sponsored by the University of Kassel - has so far been awarded annually in the summer semester to philosophers, historians, literary scholars or religious scholars who were persecuted by National Socialism for anti-Semitic reasons and driven from their homeland and therefore their academic careers had to continue or begin in non-German-speaking countries and, in their research, also specifically dealt with questions of European-Jewish history, culture and education and therefore in their courses at Kassel University again something of the Jewish heritage destroyed by National Socialism able to make conscious.

The Franz Rosenzweig visiting professorship was headed in this form by Wolfdietrich Schmied-Kowarzik for twenty years until his retirement. In the meantime, it is being continued in a somewhat modified form, so that younger scientists whose research relates to the topic of the destroyed Jewish heritage in European intellectual history can also take up this visiting professorship.
