Joachim Israel (born June 9, 1920 in Karlsruhe ; † May 15, 2001 in Halmstad , Sweden ) was a Swedish sociologist, social psychologist and critical social theorist who had emigrated from Germany .

Life

Because Joachim Israel was forbidden to continue attending grammar school at the age of 16 because of his Jewish origins, he switched to the Jewish boarding school in Niederlausitz founded by the Zionist-socialist Chalutz movement in 1936 , in order to concentrate intellectually and practically on work in a kibbutz in Palestine prepare.

When emigration to Palestine became impossible, he emigrated to Sweden in 1938 , where he worked as a farm laborer for five years until he was able to study philosophy, sociology and psychology at Stockholm University .

In 1952 he received his doctorate in Stockholm and obtained his habilitation in sociology in 1956. He then taught as a professor at the Universities of Uppsala , Copenhagen and Lund , where he also offered lectures in sociology and philosophy after his retirement in 1986. Visiting professorships have taken him to the USA, Norway, Israel, Australia and Germany. In 1989 he took up the Franz Rosenzweig visiting professorship at the University of Kassel .

Act

Joachim Israel is one of the internationally best known theorists of a philosophically founded sociology. His books have been translated into many world languages. Published in German - partly as paperbacks in large editions -: The concept of alienation (1972), the social relationships (1977), the concept of dialectic (1979), language and knowledge (1990). Joachim Israel had followed Martin Buber's philosophy since his youth , so he dedicated his Franz Rosenzweig guest lecture in Kassel to Buber's work: Martin Buber: Philosophy of Dialogue in Theory and Practice (1995). His basic introduction Action and Interaction (2003) was also published posthumously in German translation.

Israel tried to write easily understandable and to avoid sociological terminology. He had the Volvo assembly line worker Robert Björkenvall read and criticize the entire manuscript for Social Relations . In the foreword he thanks him for "intolerance of all technical, sociological jargon."

His work deals with central problems at the interface between philosophy, sociology, social psychology and linguistics. The range of topics that Joachim Israel worked on ranges from epistemological treatises to concrete empirical social analyzes - theory and practice always remain interrelated. He saw a particular concern of his epistemological tasks in communicating the dialectical philosophy of Hegel and Marx with Anglo-American linguistics and social science.

Israel regularly intervened in practical political matters, such as understanding the concerns of the Palestinians , and investigated Ulrike Meinhof's death in prison as a member of an international committee .
