Wolfdietrich Schmied-Kowarzik

Wolfdietrich Schmied-Kowarzik (born March 11, 1939 in Friedberg (Hesse) ) is a German philosopher . From 1971 to 2007 he was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Kassel .

Life

Wolfdietrich Schmied-Kowarzik is the youngest son of the Austrian philosopher Walther Schmied-Kowarzik and the German-Baltic writer Gertrud von den Brincken . Until 1945 he grew up in Mödling near Vienna, then in the Upper Palatinate. After graduating from high school in Regensburg in 1959, he studied philosophy, ethnology and psychology at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1963 with the dissertation Sense and Existence in Schelling's Late Philosophy .

From 1964 he was a research assistant at the University of Bonn , where he completed his habilitation in 1970. In 1966 Wolfdietrich Schmied-Kowarzik and the teacher Iris von Gottberg married. The marriage had three children: Anatol (1968), Daria (1970) and Robin (1975).

From 1971 until his retirement in 2007, Schmied-Kowarzik was Professor of Philosophy and Education with a focus on dialectical philosophy and practical philosophy at the University of Kassel. From 1977 to 2006 he was on the board of the interdisciplinary working group for fundamental philosophical problems at the University of Kassel. In this context he initiated international conferences on the philosophy of practice (1982, 1984, 1993); international congresses on the philosophy of religion by Franz Rosenzweig (1986 and 2004) and on the philosophy of Richard Hönigswald (1995) as well as on intercultural philosophy (2001 and 2006).

Wolfdietrich Schmied-Kowarzik led courses on Marxism and Existential Philosophy at the Inter University Center in Dubrovnik from 1983 to 1988 and gave guest lectures in Poland (1984, 1987, 1988, 1990, 2001), Brazil (1990, 1999), Estonia and Latvia (1991 , 1994, 1999), Israel (2000, 2006) and China (2007) are true. He is co-editor of the Kasseler Philosophische Schriften series as well as editor of the studies on philosophy of practice and since 1990 on the co-editor of the Vienna Yearbook for Philosophy . In 2004 the International Rosenzweig Society was founded in Kassel , and he was elected its first president. Since 2011 he has been living in Vienna again.
