The Rječina (dt. Fluff , ital. Fiumara ) is a river in Croatia that flows into the Adriatic Sea in the city of Rijeka ( Fiume ) .
The river is about 19 km long and an average width of 9 to 16 m. It rises from a cave below a cliff on the Kičej hill ( 606 m. I. Y. Year ). Until 1870, the spring was still under the nearby Podjavorje hill, but it collapsed in an earthquake near the village of Klana. The main tributaries Sušica, Lužac, Zala, Zahumčica, Golubinka, Ričinica and Borovšćica are dry for most of the year. In 1968 a dam was built that is used as a hydroelectric power station, which on the one hand created Lake Valići and on the other hand the village of the same name disappeared. Almost half of the Rječina flows through a canyon . In Rijeka the river branches into two parts: the Mrtvi canal ( German dead canal ) and the new canal, which was created in the 19th century when the Mrtvi canal was used as a port. The most important attraction is Gaspar's Mill ( Gašparov mlin ) in Martinovo Selo, which was renovated in the 1990s. The best-known representatives of the fauna include the brown trout and crayfish .
border
Throughout history, the river has often formed the border between different states. This happened for the first time between the 13th and 16th centuries, when he separated the lands of St. Stephen's Crown from the Habsburg Monarchy . It was similar in 1868 when the Rječina represented the border between the Croatian and Hungarian parts of Austria-Hungary . For a very short time after the First World War it was the border between the Free State of Fiume and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . After the Free State of Fiume was annexed by Italy in 1924 , the Rječina became the border river of this state. It was only after the Second World War that it was no longer on a state border.
