Rob Guest , OBE (born July 17, 1950 in Birmingham , England , † October 2, 2008 in Melbourne , Australia , actually Robert John Guest ) was a New Zealand theater actor , singer and presenter .

biography

Rob Guest began his career as a singer on the New Zealand pop charts and starred in many television shows such as Happen Inn . He was also known in Korea and Czechoslovakia and won the Best Performance Award at the Korean Song Festival in 1978 and was named Professional Performer of the Year in New Zealand . In the same year he shot a television special for CBC . He then moved to the USA and worked in various cities, including a. Las Vegas and Atlantic City as presenters and artists. In 1985 he won an award from the FIDOF charity in Los Angeles .

At the end of the 1980s he moved to Australia for an engagement as "Jean Valjean" in the musical Les Misérables . For this he received the Green Room Award in 1991. He then took on the role of Phantom of the Opera and played the leading role from 1991 to 1998. With a total of 2,289 performances, he holds the world record. On January 1, 1994, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for service to the New Zealand entertainment industry. He also hosted the game show Man O Man , an Australian adaptation of Mann-O-Mann .

After his permanent engagement with Phantom der Oper, he played among others Al Jolson in the musical Jolson and Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music . He had other leading roles in the musicals Footloose and The Music Man . In 2008 he played the Wizard of Oz in the musical Wicked - The Witches of Oz . On Tuesday, September 30th, he suffered a stroke and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, where he died two days later at the age of 58.
