In 1990 Brumfield earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Louisiana State University , Baton Rouge . In 1993 he graduated with the thesis Avian biodiversity in northwestern South America: elucidating the origin of the Choco avifauna for a Master of Science at the Illinois State University . After a six-year doctoral program from 1993 to 1999 at the University of Maryland, College Park , he was under the direction of Michael James Brown with the dissertation Evolution of Brilliant Male Plumage traits in Manacus: Hybrid Zones, Molecular Systematics, and Riverine Barrie to Ph. D. PhD in zoology. From 2000 to 2002 he completed his post-doctoral phase as a research assistant to evolutionary biologist Scott V. Edwards at the Department of Zoology at the University of Washington in Seattle on a research grant from the National Science Foundation . From 2003 to 2008 and 2009 to 2012 he was the curator of genetic resources at the Museum of Natural Science at Louisiana State University and an assistant professor in the Department of Life Sciences at Louisiana State University. From August 2012 to August 2013 he was Program Director and Group Leader in Systematics and Biodiversity Research at the Department of Environmental Biology in the Visiting Scientist, Engineer, and Educator Program (VSEE) of the National Science Foundation. Since August 2013 he has been director of the Museum of Natural Science at Louisiana State University and professor of life sciences at Louisiana State University.

1998 Brumfield was next to James V. Remsen first descriptor of the subspecies Cinnycerthia fulva fitzpatricki and Cinnycerthia fulva gravesi of the Sepia Wren . In 2004 he described the divisor ant shrike ( Thamnophilus divisorius ) with Bret M. Whitney and David C. Oren . In 2006 he established the genus Epinecrophylla with Morton L. Isler , in 2012 in collaboration with Robert Terry Chesser and Gustavo A. Bravo the genus Isleria and in 2013 with Isler and Bravo the genus Hafferia . In 2014, along with F. Gary Stiles, he was one of the first to describe the subspecies Myiopagis olallai coopmansi and Myiopagis olallai incognita of the foothill olive tyrant .

In 2020 Brumfield was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
