Robert Andras

Robert Knight Andras PC (born February 20, 1921 in Lachine , Montreal , Québec , † November 17, 1982 ) was a Canadian entrepreneur and politician of the Liberal Party , who was several times a member of the lower house and minister.

Life

Andras joined the Canadian Army as a soldier and took part in World War II . He later stayed in the army and was finally promoted to major . After retiring from the army, he worked in the private sector and was initially managing director of the auto dealership Gibson Motors Ltd. in 1958, which he became owner in 1960.

In the general election of November 8, 1965 , he was elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the lower house and initially represented the constituency of Port Arthur until the general election on May 22, 1979 and then until his departure from the lower house on February 17 1980 the constituency of Thunder Bay-Nipigon . At the beginning of his membership in parliament he was a member of various standing committees of the lower house.

On July 6, 1968, Andras was first appointed to the 20th government of Canada by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau , initially as a minister without portfolio . As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he became Minister of State for Urban Affairs on June 30, 1971, and then Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs on January 28, 1972. In another government reshuffle, Trudeau appointed him Minister of Labor and Immigration on November 27, 1972, before becoming President of the Treasury on September 14, 1976. Andras was last Minister of State for Economic Development in the 20th Cabinet from November 24, 1978 to June 3, 1979.
