Robert Aymar (* 1936 in France ) is a physicist and former Director General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN in Geneva.

After studying physics at the École polytechnique , Robert Aymar joined the Corps des Poudres , a former research agency for basic research. In 1959 he was seconded to the French atomic energy agency CEA ( Commissariat à l'énergie atomique ) and focused his research on the field of fundamental plasma physics and its application for controlled thermonuclear fusion.

In 1977 he took over the management of the Tore Supra fusion experiment in Cadarache , which is a tokamak with superconducting magnets . He held this position until 1988 and led the project from the conception and planning phase to the first production of a plasma. In 1990 he became chairman of the supervisory board for matter research of the CEA.

From 1994 he was head of the ITER project for which he received the Global Energy Prize in 2006 .

From January 2004 to December 2008 he succeeded Luciano Maiani as General Director of CERN. His successor is Rolf-Dieter Heuer .

In 2012 Aymar received the IEEE Max Swerdlow Award for Sustained Service to the Applied Superconductivity Community . Aymar Chevalier has been since 1980, Officier of the National Order of Merit of France since 1988 and Commander with Star of the Order of the Lion of Finland since 2008 .
