Luciano Maiani (born July 16, 1941 in Rome ) is an Italian physicist who deals with elementary particle physics.

He received his diploma (Laurea) in physics in 1964 . He then worked with Raoul Gatto's group in Florence and was a post-doctoral student at Harvard University (Lyman Laboratory of Physics) in 1969 . In 1976 he became a professor at the University of Rome and in 1984 at the University of La Sapienza in Rome. From 1993 to 1997 he was President of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). From 2008 to 2011 he was President of the Italian National Research Council, the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR).

In 1977 he was visiting professor at the École normal supérieure and from 1979 to 1980 and 1985/86 visiting professor at CERN.

In 1970, together with Sheldon Lee Glashow and John Iliopoulos, he founded the so-called GIM mechanism , which predicted the existence of the charm quark . He and Guido Altarelli made early applications of perturbative QCD , so independently of and simultaneously with Mary K. Gaillard and Benjamin W. Lee the reinforcement of the matrix elements of non- leptonic weak decays of strange particles (like kaons ) by QCD corrections as a step towards explanation the observed but long puzzling selection rule. This was followed by application to weak nonleptonic decays of particles with charm (before its discovery). In 1976, Maiani investigated CP violation in theories with three generations of quarks and predicted a small electrical dipole moment of the neutron. In the 1980s he turned to the QCD on the lattice , among other things with the calculation of the decay constants of mesons with charm quarks and of B mesons .

From January 1999 to December 2003, Luciano Maiani was Director General of CERN . In 1979 he received the Mateucci Medal, in 2007 the Dirac Medal (ICTP) , in 2003 the Premio Enrico Fermi and in 1987 the Sakurai Prize . In 2011 he received the High Energy and Particle Physics Prize of the EPS and in 2013 the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize .

In 1988 he became a member of the Accademia dei Lincei . He is a member of the Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze . In 1991 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 1999 he was elected a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
