Robert Hughes Beale , nickname also Bob or Bobby , (born January 8, 1884 in Maidstone , † October 5, 1950 in Dymchurch ) was an English football goalkeeper .

Career

Robert Beale was born in Maidstone in 1884, the son of a councilor. In the summer of 1905, the talented goalkeeper from Maidstone United came to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Southern League , but completed only a few appearances there behind Mark Mellors and Hugh MacDonald . After three years, he moved to league rivals Norwich City in May 1908 , where he soon became a regular goalkeeper with his clear-cut style of play. With a calm and serenity that was also carried over to his teammates, he completed a total of 105 appearances in the Southern League.

After first division club Manchester United put their two previous goalkeepers Hugh Edmonds and Harry Moger on the transfer list in May 1912 , a replacement was found in Beale for £ 275. At Manchester, the calm, attentive and daring goalkeeper developed into one of the best in the English elite league. In 1913 he also played alongside nine previous or future English national players in a 4-1 loss for a league selection (Beale - Downs , Fletcher - Cuggy , Boyle , Utley - Wallace , Buchan , Halse , Woodward , Hodkinson ) against the Scottish Counterpart and in 1914 in an international test match between the north and the rest of England .

With the cessation of the game operations of the Football League in the summer of 1915 because of the First World War , Beales' career as a professional footballer ended after 105 appearances for Manchester. The first war season 1915/16 he played for Arsenal as a guest player in the London Combination created as a league replacement ; After the war ended, he joined Gillingham FC in 1919 , but lost his place in goal in the early stages of the season and returned to his hometown club Maidstone United at the end of his career in 1920. In addition, Beale was occasionally requested by Manchester United to help out in their reserve team.
