Josef Jenni (born November 1, 1953 ) is a Swiss electrical engineer , solar pioneer , entrepreneur and politician of the Civil Democratic Party (BDP).

Live and act

Jenni grew up in Bremgarten near Bern . During his studies from 1973 to 1976 as a qualified electrical engineer at the technical college in Burgdorf , he dealt with the topics of energy and environmental protection . Among other things, he was part of the initiative group that called for twelve car-free Sundays in Switzerland . The popular initiative launched in 1974 and submitted in 1975 came to the vote on May 28, 1978 as the "Federal People's Initiative for 12 motor vehicle-free Sundays per year", but was rejected by 63.7 percent.

After completing his studies, Josef Jenni founded the sole proprietorship Jenni-Sonnenenergie-Steuerungen in 1976, specializing in solar technology and the development of solar systems . In 1978 he converted the company into a stock corporation . Since then, this has been operating as Jenni Energietechnik AG , based in Burgdorf. In 1982, Jenni Liegenschaften AG , which specializes in the construction of manufacturing and residential buildings, was founded, as well as the construction of its own workshop in Oberburg . This was converted from 1991 to 1992 into a workshop that was completely powered by solar energy. In 1985 Josef Jenni initiated the Tour de Sol solar vehicle race .

In 1989 Jenni built the first house in Europe fully heated with solar energy in Oberburg near Burgdorf . In 1991 Jenni Energietechnik AG won the special solar prize at the Swiss Solar Prize. The Jenni Energietechnik AG workshop, which is 100% solar powered, was followed by another Swiss solar award in the commercial and enterprise category in 1994 and the European solar award in 1995 . In 2004 Jenni won his third Swiss solar award in the energy systems category for the Sonnenhaus in Oberburg .

In 2007 Jenni Energietechnik AG completed the first fully solar heated apartment building in Europe. For this, Jennis company received the National Award at the Energy Globe Award for Switzerland in 2009. For his life's work in favor of solar energy, Josef Jenni was also awarded the Watt d'Or Prize by the Federal Office for Energy in 2008 .

In addition to his career as a solar energy entrepreneur, Josef Jenni was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern for the Evangelical People's Party (EVP) from 2006 to 2012 , where he was active in various bodies on the topics of energy and the environment. He also wrote various books on these topics and continues to give lectures to this day.

In 2019 Josef Jenni changed parties. As a new member of the Civil Democratic Party (BDP), he ran for the National Council elections in autumn 2019.

As a member of the Committee for Responsible Companies, he supports the corporate responsibility initiative .

Josef Jenni lives in Oberburg, is married and has two daughters and a son.
