Robert Bieri

Robert Bieri (born January 31, 1945 in Zurich ) is a Swiss mathematician and professor emeritus at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Bieri received his doctorate in 1972 under Beno Eckmann at the ETH Zurich ("Groups with Poincaré duality"). He deals with geometric, topological and homological methods in group theory .

Working together with Eckmann, he introduced the concept of Poincaré duality for groups and classified resolvable groups with Poincaré duality. With Eckmann he introduced a generalization (groups with homological duality). With John RJ Groves he also introduced concepts of tropical geometry to group theory at an early stage ( George Bergman is considered to be the pioneer of tropical geometry with a paper from 1971). In 1980, together with Ralph Strebel, he introduced the geometric invariant for metabelian groups G, which he generalized to a further class of groups in 1987 with Walter David Neumann and Raph Strebel ( Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariant ).
