from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Carr Dynes (born November 8, 1942 in London (Ontario) ) is a Canadian-American physicist.

Dynes studied at the University of Western Ontario with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and at McMaster University with a master's degree in 1965 and a doctorate in 1968. As a post-doctoral student , he was at ATT Bell Laboratories and was employed there in 1970. From 1975 he headed the semiconductor department, in 1982/83 the material science department (Material Physics Research) and from 1983 to 1990 he headed the research department in chemical physics.

In 1991 he became a professor at the University of California, San Diego , where he headed the physics faculty in 1994/95 and was Chancellor of the university from 1996 to 2003. Dynes was President of the University of California from 2003 to 2008, where he was also a professor at the University of California, Berkeley , where he directed a laboratory on superconductivity.

In 1990 he received the Fritz London Memorial Prize for his wide-ranging contributions to low-temperature physics, including tunnel studies and theoretical analyzes of strongly coupled superconductors, the creative use of tunnel junctions to measure the quasiparticle lifetimes in superconductors and to investigate phonon propagation in solids and in liquid helium, and the observation of weak localization in two-dimensional systems (laudation).

He also deals with electron beam lithography and high temperature superconductors.

Dynes is a Fellow of the American Physical Society , the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences (1989). In 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from McMaster University and he is honorary doctorate from the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto .

He is a US citizen.
