Robert Couper

Robert Couper (born September 22, 1750 in Sorbie , † January 18, 1818 in Wigton, Cumbria ) was a Scottish writer and doctor.

Life

In 1769 Couper began studying theology at the University of Glasgow . He wanted to be a priest in the Church of Scotland . His parents died before he could graduate and so he took the position of tutor in a family in Virginia (USA). At the outbreak of the American War of Independence in 1776 he returned to Scotland, studied medicine in Glasgow and initially practiced in Newton Stewart ( Wigtownshire ).

In 1788 he moved to Fochabers ( Banffshire ) and became a doctor of the Duke of Gordon (Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon 1743-1827). He became known for his poetry chiefly in the Scottish Language , which he published in 1804 with a dedication to the Duke of Gordon. In 1806 he left Fochabers and died in Wigton ( Cumbria ) in 1818 .
