Robert F. Singer

Robert Friedrich Singer (born April 17, 1950 in Jena ; † January 26, 2019 ) was a German materials scientist . As a professor, he held the chair “Materials Science and Technology of Metals” at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Life

Robert F. Singer studied materials science in Erlangen. After doing his doctorate and working as an assistant to Bernhard Ilschner in 1979, moved to Stanford University (Ca., USA), then worked for ABB in Baden (Switzerland), most recently as head of the ceramics department in group research and coordinator of the group's international fuel cell activities. Since 1991 Singer has been professor for materials science and metal technology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He was also the spokesman for the board of the Central Institute for New Materials and Process Technology, managing partner of New Materials Fürth GmbH, member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Visiting Professor Department of Aeronautics Imperial College London. In 2006/2007 he was President of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS) in London.

Singer's research focus was the relationship between microstructure and properties of metallic materials. His work can essentially be divided into three areas:

  • Development of new manufacturing processes for materials and molded parts (casting, powder metallurgy and coating processes)
  • Modeling these processes
  • Alloy development: high-temperature structural materials (superalloys), light metals (aluminum, magnesium, composites, metal foams)

Together with Bernhard Ilschner , Singer is the author of the textbook “Material Science and Manufacturing Technology” ( ISBN 978-3-642-01733-9 ).
