Bernhard Ilschner
Bernhard Ilschner (born December 13, 1928 in Danzig ; † January 4, 2006 in Lausanne ) was a German physicist and pioneer in materials science .
Life
Bernhard Ilschner went to school in Berlin , Dresden and Rudolstadt . He graduated from high school in Rudolstadt in 1946. From 1946 to 1950 he studied physics , mathematics and chemistry at the University of Rostock (Alma Mater Rostochiensis) and the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 1951 he graduated in theoretical physics in Jena.
After completing his studies, he carried out research at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf , at Krupp Research in Essen and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Ilschner was born in 1954 with his work on the theory of the oxidation of metals at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms University in Bonn doctorate . In 1963 he completed his habilitation at the Georg August University in Göttingen with the thesis Structural Problems in the Breakdown of Substances from Crystallized Compounds . Until 1965 he was a private lecturer at the Institute for Metal Physics there.
In 1965, Ilschner was appointed to the chair for materials science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , while at the same time serving as the founding director of the Institute for Materials Science. In 1969 Ilschner became Vice Rector and from 1972 to 1975 Rector at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .
From 1980 to 1982 Ilschner was involved in the advisory board for science and university issues of the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture. In 1981 he was appointed to the German section of the permanent office of the “Conférence des Grandes Écoles”.
1982 Ilschner changed to the chair for mechanical material behavior at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne . 1997 Ilschner retired.
Ilschner is seen as a co-founder of materials science in Germany. His research always endeavored to incorporate knowledge from the basic area into applied materials research.
