Robert Bannatyne Finlay, 1st Viscount Finlay GCMG PC (born  July 11, 1842 in Edinburgh , †  March 9, 1929 in London ) was a British doctor and lawyer . He served as a Member of the British Parliament from 1885 to 1892, from 1895 to 1906 and from 1910 to 1916, and as Lord Chancellor from 1916 to 1919 . From 1922 until his death he worked as a judge at the Permanent International Court of Justice .

Life

Robert Finlay was in 1842 in Edinburgh born and graduated from the local university to study medicine , which he completed. 1863 Just two years later he began legal training with the Middle Temple Bar Association , and in 1867 he was admitted to the bar . From 1885 to 1892 and from 1895 to 1906 he was a member of the Liberals and from 1910 to 1916 for the Conservatives of the House of Commons . In 1895 he was appointed Solicitor General for England and Wales , and from 1900 to 1905 he was Attorney General for England and Wales .

After becoming rector of the University of Edinburgh in 1902 , he became a member of the Privy Council in 1905 . From 1916 to 1919 he served as Lord Chancellor under Prime Minister David Lloyd George . From 1920 he was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague . The following year he was also elected judge at the newly established Permanent International Court of Justice , where he served until his death and at that time was the oldest serving member of the court.

Robert Finlay was married from 1874 and had one son. He died in London in 1929 .

Awards

Robert Finlay was appointed Crown Attorney in 1882 and knighted in 1895 , followed in 1904 as Knight Grand Cross in the Order of St. Michael and St. George . He received the title of Baron Finlay in 1916 and three years later, after leaving the office of Lord Chancellor, the title of Viscount Finlay , which expired in 1945 with the death of his son.
