Robert Folz

Robert Folz (March 12, 1910 in Metz , † March 5, 1996 in Dijon ) was a French historian .

Robert Folz came from a German-speaking family. His father was a high school history teacher. Folz graduated from high school in Metz and studied history, geography, classical philology and law at the Universities of Nancy and Strasbourg . Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre in particular were among his academic teachers. In 1933 he completed his studies with the Agrégation d'histoire et de geographie . Folz then taught history at the grammar schools in Mulhouse in 1933/34 and from 1935 to 1947 in Strasbourg. In 1936/37 he went to Berlin to the "Institut Français" to prepare a doctoral thesis on the legend of Charlemagne , which was entrusted by Marc Bloch. Folz did military service in the French army from 1939/40 and from 1942/45. In the meantime, Folz worked as a teacher at the Lycée in Oran . With a thesis on Charlemagne and the German Middle Ages, Folz received his doctorate in 1949 at the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1947 to 1952 he was a lecturer in Ancient and Medieval History and has been a full professor for Medieval History at the University of Dijon since 1952 . In 1955 he became a corresponding member of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica and in 1964 a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature . He was also a corresponding member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and the British Academy . In 1979 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Mainz for his services . Folz was an officer in the Legion of Honor .

The subject of Folz included the history of the medieval empire. The focus of his research was on the imperial idea , the canonized kings and queens and the corresponding cult of saints, but also the afterlife of Charlemagne in later times. He published numerous reviews of German-language writings for French journals. He also wrote reports on research in Germany for decades in the " Revue Historique ".
