Robert Gambill

Robert Gambill (born March 31, 1955 in Indianapolis , USA ) is an American opera singer ( heroic tenor ).

Life

In 1973 Robert Gambill began to study mathematics at Purdue University , West Lafayette, Indiana, and in 1976 he joined the University of Hamburg as an exchange student. There he studied German and singing at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater with Hans Kagel .

At the age of 25 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan in the lead role of "Michael" in Karlheinz Stockhausen's world premiere Thursday from Light , directed by Luca Ronconi.

From 1984 to 1987 he sang the lyric bel canto and the great Mozart roles in the ensemble of the Zurich Opera House . His repertoire included Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni , Tamino in the Magic Flute as well as Fenton in the Lustige Frau von Windsor or the Count Almaviva in the Barber of Seville . In 1987 he celebrated his international breakthrough in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri in Michael Hampe's Zurich production. This was followed by appearances at major European theaters and overseas, including the Vienna State Opera , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Festival in Glyndebourne and Aix-en-Provence.

In 1995 Robert Gambill switched to the difficult German subject under the supervision of Irmgard Hartmann-Dressler (1924–2013). In the role of the painter in Berg's Lulu at the Salzburg Festival or as Narraboth in Strauss' Salome in Stuttgart and London, he quickly attracted attention. He soon gained international recognition as a hero tenor. His roles include Tannhäuser , Tristan , Siegmund and Parsifal . With conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Simon Rattle and Zubin Mehta, he sang the hero tenor parts a. a. at the opera houses in New York, London, Paris, San Francisco, Chicago, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Milan as well as at Carnegie Hall and at the Salzburg Festival (Easter and Summer), Aix-en-Provence, Tanglewood and Glyndebourne.

Robert Gambill is one of the few tenors who has achieved an internationally significant career both in the lyric bel canto subject and as a heroic tenor.
