Robert Marek Grzywna (born February 8, 1974 in Chocianów in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship , † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was a Polish pilot and major in the Polish Air Force .

Life

Grzywna finished his education in 1993 at the General Aviation High School (Ogólnokształcące Liceum Lotnicze im. F. Ż Wirki i S. Wigury) in Dęblin in the Lublin Voivodeship .

In 1997, Grzywna finished his training at the Officers' College of the Air Force (Wyższa Szkoła Oficerska Sił Powietrznych) in Dęblin. In the same year he began his service with the 36th Special Squadron of Transport Aviation (36 Specjalny Pułk Lotnictwa Transportowego) , since 2009 he was crew commander (Dowódca załogi) there . In 2003 he finished his postgraduate studies with a master's degree at the Academy for Defense of the Nation ( Akademia Obrony Narodowej ) at the Institute for Air Force and Air Defense (Instytut Lotnictwa i Obrony Powietrznej) . Until his death in 1939, he had completed flying hours and was considered an experienced pilot.

On April 10, 2010, Robert Marek Grzywna flew as the second pilot together with Arkadiusz Protasiuk as the flight captain of a Polish delegation led by President Lech Kaczyński , which was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre . During the approach to the destination Smolensk-Nord , there was thick fog and the plane crashed . Hryvnia was killed along with its crew and passengers - most of them high-ranking representatives of Poland.

Robert Grzywna was awarded the bronze medal for services to the defense of the country (Brązowy Medal Za zasługi dla obronności kraju) during his lifetime . Posthumously he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on April 15, 2010 and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Kawalerski Orderu Odrodzenia Polski) on April 16, 2010 .

Hryvnia was married and had a daughter.
