biography

Hessens worked with Alain Resnais and Gaston Diehl in the late 1940s . The short documentaries about art that were made during this period make a significant contribution to art history, as historian and film critic Jacques Siclier found.

In 1950 , Hessens and Gaston Diehl were awarded an Oscar in the category “Best Short Film” (2 film roles) for their participation in the documentary short film Van Gogh . The film deals with the life and work of Vincent van Gogh .

In the short film Guernica , which Hessens realized with Alain Resnais in 1951, both address the attack by the German air force on the small Basque town of Guernica on April 26, 1937, in which countless people were killed. Picasso, like millions of people around the world, was so shocked by this that he painted a picture to which he named the city .

In 1952, Hessens was honored with a special award at the Golden Globes for the documentary Pictura , "an outstanding cultural film from 1951". Hessens received this award together with the directors of the film Ewald André Dupont , Luciano Emmer and Alain Resnais ("Segment Goya)". The film was able to attract prominent speakers for its individual episodes, including Henry Fonda , Lilli Palmer , Gregory Peck and Vincent Price .
