Robert Hobart, 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire PC ( May 6, 1760 - February 4, 1816 in London ) was a British politician .

Life

Hobart was the son of George Hobart, 3rd Earl of Buckinghamshire , and his wife Albinia, daughter of Lord Vere Bertie, younger son of Robert Bertie, 1st Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven . He attended Westminster School in London .

He was a member of the Irish House of Commons from 1784 to 1797 . From 1788 to 1796 he also sat in the British House of Commons , first for the constituency of Bramber and from 1790 for Lincoln . In 1793 he became a member of the Privy Council and succeeded Charles Oakeley as governor of Madras , which he remained until 1797. On his return to Great Britain in 1798, he was appointed to the House of Lords by assuming his father's subordinate title Baron Hobart ( Writ of Acceleration ) . He served as Secretary of War and Colonial Affairs from 1801 to 1804, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1805 and 1812 , Postmaster General from 1806 to 1807, and President of the Board of Control from 1812 to 1816.

Hobart married his first wife Margaretta, daughter of Edmund Bourke, in 1792. They had a son, who died in childhood, and a daughter, Lady Sarah, who married the British Prime Minister Lord Goderich and was the mother of George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon . After the death of his first wife Margaretta in 1796, he married Eleanor Agmes, daughter of William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland in 1799 . He had no children with her. Lord Buckinghamshire died in February 1816 at the age of 55 after falling from his horse. Heir to the title was his nephew George .

The capital of Tasmania , Hobart , was named after him.
