Robert Bertie, 1st Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven (born October 20, 1660 , † July 26, 1723 in Grimsthorpe , Lincolnshire ), was a British peer and politician .

Life

He was the eldest son of Robert Bertie, 3rd Earl of Lindsey , from his second marriage to the Hon. Elizabeth Wharton, daughter of Philip Wharton, 4th Baron Wharton . As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Willoughby from 1666 .

From 1685 to 1690 he was a member of the House of Commons as Burgess for Boston . In 1690 he was re-elected to the House of Commons as Burgess for Preston , but then inherited the subordinate title of his father as 17th Baron Willoughby de Eresby prematurely through Writ of Acceleration of April 19, 1690 and moved up to the House of Lords . On April 4, 1701 he received the office of Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. When his father died in May 1701, he also inherited his title as 4th Earl of Lindsey and the hereditary court office of Lord Great Chamberlain . On June 19, 1701 he was insPrivy Council appointed.

On December 21, 1706 he was bestowed the hereditary title Marquess of Lindsey . In 1715 he temporarily held the office of Lord Justice , while King George I was staying in Hanover . On July 26, 1715, he was raised to Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven .

Marriages and offspring

His first marriage was on July 30, 1678 in Westminster Abbey Mary Wynn († 1689), daughter of Sir Richard Wynn, 4th Baronet. With her he had two sons:

His second marriage was on July 6, 1705, Albinia Farrington (around 1699-1745), daughter of Maj.-Gen. Thomas Farrington. With her he had four sons and a daughter, including:

  • Lord Vere Bertie;
  • Lord Montague Bertie.

Since he survived his childless eldest son, his second son, Peregrine Bertie, inherited him as the 2nd Duke in 1723.
