Robert Sternberg

Robert J. Sternberg (born December 8, 1949 in New Jersey ) is an American psychologist .

Sternberg was Professor of Psychology at Tufts University near Boston and Director of the Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and Expertise there. He was previously Professor of Psychology and Education at Yale University . Since 2007 he has held an honorary professorship at the Psychological Institute of Heidelberg University . In 2010 he accepted the position as Chancellor ( English Provost and Senior Vice President ) at Oklahoma State University . In July 2013, Sternberg succeeded Thomas Buchanan as President of the University of Wyoming , which he only remained until his resignation in November of the same year.

Sternberg is a past president of the American Psychological Association . His most important work includes the drafting of a "triarchic" theory of intelligence . Sternberg became known to a wider public through debates with Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray , the authors of the book " The Bell Curve ".

Sternberg also wrote the triangular theory of love (1986), which regards love as an expression of the three components intimacy , passion and attachment , and works on psychological research into wisdom.

In 1995 Sternberg was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2018 he received a Grawemeyer Award .
