Live and act

Robert Jackson Emerson was the eldest of twelve children of the shoemaker John Edward Emerson and his wife Fanny nee. Bunney. He attended school until 1893, then began an apprenticeship as a shoemaker and attended evening classes at the School of Arts and Crafts in Leicester . In 1901 he obtained an art teacher license and taught part-time.

From 1901 to 1906 he won several recognitions, medals and book prizes for design , modeling and life drawing at local arts competitions in South Kensington . In 1902 he received the King's Prize and was able to study metal art and modeling in Rouen and Paris for a month . From 1906 he worked for the metal art company Collins and Company in Leicester, which made decorative metalwork such as jewelry, fittings and cast plates for churches. Emerson's first works were exhibited at the Grafton Gallery in Mayfair , London .

In 1910 he was appointed to teach at the Municipal School of Art in Wolverhampton . The aim of the work at the school was to teach the students techniques and skills in drawing, modeling, metalworking and the processing of stone and leather in order to be able to work in artisanal branches for the benefit of the local industry. A small proportion of the students should be trained as professional artists; among them his most famous student Charles Wheeler and Atri Brown , Thomas Bayliss Huxley-Jones , Geoffrey Hampton Deeley and Albert Pountney .

In 1920 Emerson founded a studio in Wolverhampton with the support of Norvall Graham, the editor of the local daily Express & Star , whom he described as "very best friend". He also made it possible for him to work on larger commissions for the city. From 1937 he also taught at the British School at Rome in London. In 1942 he stopped teaching. Despite serious illness, he continued to work on sculptures until his death in 1944.

Emerson was a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) from 1913 and a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors (FRBS) from 1938 . He was not a member of the Royal Academy, but exhibited there.

Robert Jackson Emerson died on December 7, 1944 and was buried in Saint Philip's Churchyard in Wolverhampton. From 1898 he was born with Annie. Brewin (1875–1969) married and had a daughter Louisa Ann (1898–1969) and a son William Ralph (1900– ??). As Charles Wheeler announced in 1945 on the occasion of the opening of an exhibition at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery , Winston Churchill beat the British King George VI. before paying the widow a pension.
