Robert Kenneth Callow
Robert Kenneth Callow (born February 15, 1901 in Goring-on-Thames , † April 12, 1983 in Maughold ) was a British biochemist .
life and work
Callow worked at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Hampstead and Mill Hill , where he worked on steroids and the isolation and characterization of vitamin D , and on the synthesis of cortisone from naturally occurring steroids.
In 1961 he identified with the compound ( E ) -9-oxo-dec-2-enoic acid, or 9-ODA for short , the second known pheromone, known as the queen bee pheromone. After retiring from NIMR in 1966, he moved to Rothamsted Research , where he continued to research insect pheromones until 1971 .
Honors and memberships
Callow was inducted into the Royal Society as a Fellow in 1958 . He was a member of the editorial board of the Biochemical Journal from 1946 to 1953. He was later Chairman of the Biological and Medical Abstracts. He was a member of the Council of the Bee Research Association from 1962 to 1974 and later its vice-president.
