Atlain was a German heavy , power and speed metal band from Herne , which was founded in 1983 under the name Destroyer and disbanded around 1985.

history

The band was formed in early 1983. After several line-up changes, as members of the Bundeswehr joined, a permanent line-up emerged. The band then consisted of the singer Peter Müller, the guitarists Jörg Pryztarski and Andreas Büttner, the bassist Andre Chapelier and the drummer Chris Efthimiadis, who was also known under the name Chris Midias. The founding members were previously roadies with the band Steeler , but decided to start their own band. The band was initially known as Destroyer. However, influenced by a Perry Rhodan novel, they soon decided to change their name to Atlain. Steeler's label boss Axel Thubeauville then became aware of the band and signed them. The band then went into the studio in September and October and released their debut album Living in the Dark in 1984 . In March of that year, the band also played a gig with Steeler. The second album GOE (Guardian of Eternity) followed in 1985. Andreas Büttner then left the band and drummer Efthimiadis joined Rage , then still known as Avenger. The band was thus dissolved. Pryztarski joined the German Rigor Mortis and Chapellier played with Holy Moses for a while . Müller later joined a band called Faithealer.

style

According to Frank Kleiner from Metal Hammer, the band play aggressive heavy metal on Living in the Dark , comparable to the music of Anvil and Mercyful Fate . Despite its aggressiveness and heaviness, the album is still melodic. Kleiner stated that the band's style on GOE is still “fast and hard” without offending “ Speed or Thrash ”. However, Müller's singing is limited. David Gregori from metal.de described Living in the Dark as a mixture of power and speed metal, with influences from bands like Judas Priest , Saxon , Metallica , Iron Maiden and Satan being heard. Martin Popoff noted in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties that the band on Living in the Dark would sound like mixing Motörhead , Accept and Judas Priest together in their faster moments. The band sounds bolder on GOE and their sound is comparable to Vulcain and Killer .
