Vulcain is a French heavy metal band from Paris .

They became one of the most popular French metal bands before the release of their debut album and broke up in 2000 after disputes. Since the end of 2009 the band has been active again in the line-up from 2000. The only constant members are the brothers Daniel and Vincent Puzio.

The name is based on the Roman deity Vulcanus , who is called Vulcain in French .

history

The band was founded in 1981 by the brothers Daniel (guitar and vocals) and Vincent Puzio (bass) in Paris. The first full line-up also included Didier Lohezic (guitar) and Richard (drums). Initially, Lohezic rehearsed when his parents were absent over the weekend. After initially replaying pieces by bands like Grand Funk Railroad , Ten Years After , AC / DC and Motörhead , they became a real band due to the popularity of their environment and wrote their own music. Richard left the band on a friendly basis after a short time and left the post to Franck Vilatte, a friend from the band's as yet unnamed band. Didier Lohézic's cousin suggested the name Vulcain.

In 1983 the English record company Ebony Records offered Vulcain to participate in the Metal Plated sampler , and the band opened for Motörhead as part of some tour dates. Before they could even release an album, the band became one of the most important in French metal. In 1984 the debut album Rock 'n' Roll secours was recorded in the Maunoir studio in Geneva and released on Devil's Records. The album was followed in 1985 by the 12 "single La Dame de Fer . In 1985 Franck Vilatte had to leave Vulcain because of personal problems. Since a studio was already reserved for the next album, the band was looking for a new drummer; Pierre Guiraud, the lead singer of Satan Jokers, introduced them to Marc Varez, who was recorded in May 1985. After two weeks of intense rehearsals, the band recorded their second album Desperados , which was released on Riff Records and distributed by Virgin . In November 1985, Vulcain and the English band Rogue Male went on tour together, which included a performance in the Eldorado in Paris, which, according to the band, was “full of bursts” , which “has unfortunately no longer been accessible to rock music ”. Vulcain and Rogue Male became friendly bands and then performed in the Netherlands. For 1985 the band mentions nominations for best French band, their work Desperados for best album, Vincent Puzios for best bassist, by Richard , which was dedicated to the former Vulcain drummer Richard who died in a motorcycle accident, for best song, and the Desperados -Tour to the best stage performance of the year; In a reader poll in Enfer magazine, the band was ranked as the most popular local group, ahead of Trust .

In August 1986 Vulcain and the English band Chariot played together at the Marquee Club in London. In November 1986 followed an appearance in the opening act of Iron Maiden and WASP in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy , a multi-purpose hall with a capacity of 17,000 people; Apart from Trust and Vulcain, no French heavy metal band played at the Bercy in the 1980s. Then came their third album Big Brothers , and in December the band performed again in London at the Marquee Club and the Electric Ballroom.

In March 1987 Vulcain and Chariot went on a tour together through France, Switzerland, Belgium, England, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. In May 1987, the album Live Force was recorded with two performances at the Locomotive in Paris. The band's rapid rise resulted in conflicts with producers and lawsuits against them; As a result, the band took a break of several months, which ultimately extended to two years and brought with it the departure of Didier Lohezic, who was tired of this business. According to Daniel Puzio and Marc Varez, personal reasons also contributed to the separation from Lohezic. Lohezic stopped playing guitar around that time, according to Daniel Puzio. The two are still friends and also work together.

In the late 1980s the band re-released their discography on CD, signed with Musidisc and thought about an evolution and modernization of their performance; The style change with transition , which was recorded with the new guitarist Franck Pilant, was well received in reviews, according to the band, but not with all fans. With this album, sales also went down. After a few tours, Pilant left the band; he was replaced by Marcos Arrieta. The band recorded their fifth studio album Big Bang in Corsica , which was released in 1992. After tensions within the group, Arrieta got out again. After leaving, the Puzio and Varez brothers decided to continue as a trio and change their style again. They also changed record labels and signed with MixIt (distributed by PIAS) and in 1994 released the album Vulcain . In addition, the album Atomic Live recorded in Pau at a concert with Killers and in the Locomotive in Paris , which was released in 1996 via Media7.

The record company XIIIBis Records offered Vulcain the release of a compilation called Vincent Puzio Compilaction , which was released in 1997 under this title. The band Stoppe la Machine recorded in the Polygone studio in Toulouse , which was released in 1998. Despite some appearances with Motörhead, among others in the Paris Bataclan , and with Deep Purple , this seemed to be the end of her career. Several more concerts followed, and Daniel Puzio refused to break up his band, which led to tension with Marc Varez; he left the band in April 2000, founded his own band Blackstone and signed (before the separation from Vulcain) for two albums with XIIIBis Records and a third with Brennus. Vincent Puzio opened a musical instrument shop in Paris and was no longer interested in playing music himself. Daniel Puzio formed Mr Jack with members of the band H Bomb, who had often performed with Vulcain in the 1980s. Mr Jack's debut album was released in 2009 via Bernett Records. Although the fans and friends of the band, as well as Philippe Michel, the organizer of the Paris Metal France Festival, kept asking for the band to return, Daniel Puzio and Marc Varez persisted and ruled out renewed Vulcain appearances. In January 2009, both Blackstone and Mr Jack performed at the Locomotive at the Paris Metal France Festival, where the quarreling musicians discreetly and symbolically shook hands. They also met at other concerts in Paris, but without any hint of a possible reunification. In October 2009, Vincent Puzio proposed that the band be reunited, and in November 2009 the three musicians rehearsed together and officially announced the return of Vulcain. Due to the obligations at Vulcain, the musicians at Blackstone and Mr Jack became less active. Vincent Puzio continued to run his musical instrument business alongside Vulcain.

On April 16, 2010, the band gave their first concert since reunification at the Chez Paulette Club near Nancy. This was followed by appearances at Hellfest (with, among others, Loudblast and Blaspheme as well as Saxon and Motörhead), in Belgium, Canada, Switzerland and Paris, where the band recorded their first DVD in Trabendo, and on December 14, 2010 in Lyon as a support act for Motörhead . At the concert in Paris the band played with their old guitarist Didier Lohezic. The TV station Arte also reported on the band in the magazine Tracks . The record company XIII Bis Records released a box with the first three Vulcain albums, which were remastered by Varez . In 2011 the band played again in France and abroad, including at the Headbangers Open Air in Germany and the French Montereau Festival. At the beginning of May 2011, En revenant… , the band's first live DVD was released along with a CD via XIII Bis Records. On this she played mainly material from her debut album, but also an unreleased song written in the 1990s with the title Les droits de l'homme ; the DVD also contains the music video for Soviet suprême ; other recordings were not added due to poor picture quality, and documentaries from the 1980s are not released on DVD because the rights would have meant additional costs and the band had exceeded their budget for the DVD anyway. The band does not rule out a future release with archive recordings. On December 9, 2011 the band played Le Divan du Monde in the Parisian hall .

In 2012 the band went to Marc Varez 'studio La Grange 69 to record their next album. From April 2012 the band went on tour again and performed together with Norbert "Nono" Krief, the guitarist of Trust, in Normandy, played in the north in Arras and at the Festival Land'n'Rock as well as in Grenoble and Switzerland. The band also played at the Samaïn Festival in Brittany. The album, originally planned for the end of 2012, has since been announced for April 22, 2013.

Music style and lyrics

The band names Ten Years After , MC5 , Grand Funk Railroad , AC / DC and Motörhead as influences. Comparisons with Motörhead were also often found in reviews, up to and including the designation as the "French offshoot of Lemmy and his men" or Motörhead copy; The Beast from Slayer - Fanzine recommended the debut album to fans of Lemmy Kilmister's vocals, provided they shouldn't have any problems with the French language, and Oliver Klemm from Metal Hammer recommended the single La Dame de Fer "Fans of this style [...], especially from the master himself there is currently nothing new to report. A good copy does it sometimes too. ”The band themselves were not bothered by the Motörhead comparisons; on the contrary, this is rather flattering for Daniel Puzio and Marc Varez prefers other comparisons, and Daniel Puzio says he is proud of them. In the beginning he also took over Lemmy Kilmister's microphone setting, opted for this and used the same guitar model as Fast Eddie Clarke , and his brother Vincent used the same Rickenbacker model as Lemmy. Daniel Puzio is still a fan of Motörhead's early work, but not the later albums with Phil Campbell .

The band moved away from the Motörhead-based style over time; According to Nestor of Music Waves , this comparison no longer makes sense with Big Brothers , although the band had already moved away from these influences on the predecessor Desperados . This album includes the hard rock pieces Kadhafi and Faire Du Rock , the blues track Jeudi 19 Juin dedicated to Coluche and a piece by Jacques Dutronc with On nous cache tout . In addition to the typical instruments, keyboard, harmonica, saxophone, acoustic guitar and banjo were used. The band itself is dissatisfied with the work with the producer and the production and, according to their own account , released Big Brothers too quickly to Desperados instead of letting the compositions mature a little. But the album contains very good compositions that have not been appropriately realized.

The first demo recordings with Franck Pilant were classified in the Metal Hammer "between speed and rock 'n' roll ". There Vulcain, Trust and Squealer were ranked among the best bands in France in a report on the French scene. The style change away from Motörhead, which took place in the 1980s with the album Transition , was praised in reviews, according to the band, but not accepted by some fans. Holger Stratmann from Rock Hard was "[z] was [...] not informed about the complete discography of this quartet", but saw an undeniable increase; Although the album opens “as expected with a hard speed hammer and a simple (but very good) riff, the following 'Sophie' and 'Rocking Chair' surprise with guitar parts influenced by Rush - or Fates Warning . Nevertheless VULCAIN do not forego the necessary speed. A large part of the songs is played quickly, and again and again you get to hear an original guitar interlude - so the fast 'Rock' n 'Roll Star' is determined by a Vai- like guitar run. As you can see, 'Transition' has become a very varied Metal album, so the French lyrics don't matter. ”After Arrieta's departure, the band decided to record a more rock-heavy album. Music Waves' Nestor reminded surfing in Hawaï of Joe Satriani .
