life and work
Robert Kiener earned the money he needed to study at the Bern Gewerbeschule with designs for stove tiles for Bern patrician houses, for furniture, illustrations in books and templates for the “bear mugs” sent all over the world by confectioners. During his training he also took courses with the drawing and painting teacher Paul Volmar at the University of Bern .
Thanks to Karl Schenk's mediation, Kiener was then able to continue his studies at the Académie Julian and the École des Arts décoratifs in Paris . There he made friends with Rudolf Münger and Gustav von Steiger .
Kiener returned to Switzerland in 1889. In 1890 he was elected to teach at the drawing school in Saint-Imier . Here he created many of his Jura landscapes. He also worked as an anatomical draftsman in Zurich and Bern. The scientific work with Theodor Kocher in particular represents a life's work in its own right. For this he illustrated the work Operations Theory .
Kiener married the teacher Maria Johanna Masshard in 1891. From 1903 he lived again in Bern and taught as a drawing teacher at the girls' secondary school there. Several study visits to Italy followed .
Kiener exhibited his works at the Kunstmuseum Bern , the Kunsthalle Basel , the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Aargauer Kunsthaus .
