Robert Klotz

Robert Klotz (born October 27, 1819 in Northampton County , Pennsylvania , †  May 1, 1895 in Mauch Chunk , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now Carbon County , Robert Klotz attended public schools in his homeland. In 1843 he worked in the Carbon County administration as a register and recorder . During the Mexican-American War he served in a volunteer unit from Pennsylvania, in which he rose to lieutenant. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . He was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1848 and 1849 . In 1855 he moved to Pawnee , Kansas Territory . He was a delegate at the meeting at which the Topeka Constitution was drafted. Under this constitution he became executive officer of the local territorial administration; in the militia he became a brigadier general. This was the time when the territory was ravaged by bloody riots between supporters and opponents of slavery . In 1857, Klotz returned to Pennsylvania, where he settled in Mauch Chunk. In 1859 he became a treasurer in Carbon County. During the civil war he served as a colonel in the Union army . Between 1874 and 1882 he was a curator at Lehigh University in Bethlehem .

In the congressional election of 1878 Klotz was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Francis Dolan Collins on March 4, 1879 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Klotz was one of the directors of the Laflin-Rand Powder Co. in New York City . He died on May 1, 1895 in Mauch Chunk, where he was buried.
