Carl Robert Kummer (born May 30, 1810 in Dresden , † December 29, 1889 there ) was a German painter.

Life

Kummer began his studies 1826-29 at the Dresden Academy with Carl August Richter. From 1829 he was in J. Ch. Clausen Dahl's studio , continued his education in Italy from 1832 to 1837 and made a trip to Hungary from Rome in 1835.

In 1837 he returned to Dresden, later visiting Dalmatia and Montenegro, 1851 Scotland, 1859 Portugal and 1868 Egypt. The artist brought back a wealth of study material from these trips, which he processed into effective images. Larger paintings by him can be found in the Dresden gallery and in the Leipzig City Museum .

Carl Robert Kummer also made a contribution to founding the German Art Cooperative , and he also developed a fruitful effect as a board member of the Hermann Foundation , which supports Saxon artists through annual competitions and grants. Kummer received the title of professor in 1859.

Kummer was the godchild and student of Caspar David Friedrich and also gave the funeral oration at Friedrich's funeral.

Carl Robert Kummer married Auguste (1821–1904) b. Neisse. They had five children:

  • Anna Kummer (1844–1925) married the agricultural scientist Hugo Grahl (1834–1905) in 1865
  • Helene Bertha Kummer (1845–1930) married Albert Eugen Friedrich Denso (1830–1904), consul since 1868, in 1864
  • Louise Kummer (1846–1925) married the Postrat Max Wohlfahrt († before 1890)
  • Oskar Ludwig Kummer (1848–1912) married Fanny (1854–1944), daughter of the sculptor Heinrich Max Imhof , in 1875
  • Paul Kummer (1850–1900) married Anni geb. March (* 1853)
