Robert L. Howze Jr.

Robert Lee Howze, Jr. (born March 23, 1903 in Washington, DC , † April 14, 1983 in Monterey , California ) was an American major general and commanding general of several divisions.

Life

Robert Howze came from a family with a strong military tradition. His father, Robert L. Howze , and his maternal grandfather, Hamilton S. Hawkins , had been cadet commanders at West Point . His younger brother, Hamilton H. Howze, was one of the fathers of American military aviation.

Howze graduated from the US Military Academy (born 1925) and then, following family tradition, became a cavalry officer . During the Second World War he led the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment ( 36th Armored Infantry Regiment ), with which he was involved in the heavy fighting of the Battle of the Bulge . He has received several awards for his services.

After the war, Howze completed general staff training at the National War College (graduated in 1947) and then first became a supply officer (G4) and in 1951 with simultaneous appointment as Brigadier General Chief of Staff at the headquarters of the US Caribbean Command (now United States Southern Command ) in Fort Amador , Panama . From 1952 to 1954 he was deputy commandant of the US Army's tank school in Fort Knox ( US Army Armor School ) and from June 1955 to February 1957 commander of the 1st US Armored Division , followed by a position as chief of staff and deputy commanding general of the 7th US Army and 6th US Army . In 1962 he retired.

Howze was killed in a traffic accident in 1983. He was buried in the National Cemetery in San Francisco.
